Distinguishing Counterfeit Coins

Tone

A dull tone is produced when the coin is dropped on a hard surface.

Finish

The relief of the design, lettering and characters on both the obverse and reverse are not distinct. The milled edges are unevenly spaced and the incused lettering on the $1 coin is poorly defined and worn off. The field of the counterfeit coin has many pitmarks and appears very porous.

Colour

The golden colour coating of the metal of the $1 coin is uneven with patches of lead colour surfacing from beneath.

Specifications

Due to the different metallic composition, the standard specification cannot be achieved faithfully; only the diameter and thickness fall within specifications.

Note:
The best way to learn about counterfeit coins is to examine them and compare them with genuine coins of the same type and date.
