This 5-cent coin was issued on 4 February 1972 for ordinary circulation in conjunction with Singapore's participation in the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) Coin Programme in 1971.

However, it was not widely circulated as some collectors hoarded them as numismatic coins.
