Minister for Education and Deputy Chairman, MAS to visit US

Singapore, 22 September 2005...Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Education and Deputy Chairman, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), will visit the United States from 23 to 28 September 2005.

2   Mr Shanmugaratnam will, together with Second Minister for Finance, Mr Raymond Lim and Minister of State, Ministry of Finance, Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, attend the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group Boards of Governors Annual Meetings in Washington DC. He will also speak at the annual International Banking Seminar organised by the Group of Thirty on 26 September.

3   Mr Shanmugaratnam will visit a number of top US universities to strengthen their partnerships with Singapore and understand their strategies for achieving excellence. These will include Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He will also visit the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and the North Carolina School of Mathematics & Science.

4   Mr Shanmugaratnam will be accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Education, National University of Singapore, Economic Development Board, Monetary Authority of Singapore, and Board Members of the Graduate Medical School.
