Asian Monetary Policy Forum (AMPF) 2016

The Third Asian Monetary Policy Forum (AMPF) was held in Singapore on 27 May 2016.  As in the past two years, this flagship event brought together globally prominent academics, policymakers and financial practitioners to exchange views and share insights on the pertinent economic, financial and monetary policy issues confronting Asia.

Joint Dinner for ABFER and AMPF

A joint ABFER/AMPF dinner on 26 May 2016 marked the close of the annual ABFER conference, and the official opening of the AMPF. The dinner featured a keynote speech by Professor Kenneth Rogoff from Harvard University, who spoke about current global growth from the historical perspective of past recoveries from financial crises, the international exchange rate system, and the scarcity of safe assets.

Keynote Address by Dr. Zhu Min, Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund

Dr. Zhu Min’s keynote address “Monetary Policy Challenges: Asia in the World”, described the prevailing trends in the global economy, including the persistence of lower growth, falling inflation, higher market volatility, the adoption of negative interest rates and the impact of China’s economic rebalancing. Dr. Zhu also gave an overview of the monetary policy frameworks in the ASEAN economies and highlighted the continued importance of globalisation to Asia, which remains the most dynamic region in the world. 
Commissioned Paper and Discussions

Professor Olivier Blanchard, the former Chief Economist of the IMF and currently C. Fred Bergsten Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics presented the commissioned paper on “Currency Wars, Coordination and Capital Controls”. This paper was discussed by Professor Takatoshi Ito from Columbia University and Professor Stephen Cecchetti from the Brandeis University International Business School.

Lunchtime Dialogue

Professor Steven Davis of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business engaged Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for Economic and Social Policies and MAS Chairman, in a dialogue on Singapore’s social and economic challenges.

Panel Discussion

Mr David Marsh from the Official Monetary & Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF) moderated a panel discussion on the economic challenges and policy issues confronting Asia. The panel comprised of Mr Ravi Menon, Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Professor Yu Yongding, Academic Advisor of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Dr. Eli Remolona, Chief Representative of the BIS Representative Office for Asia and the Pacific, and Dr. Frederic Neumann, Co-head of Asian Economics and Managing Director at the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.
