Internship

Internship 1Ang Eng Siong, Intern, 2004, Capital Markets Department
Graduate Officer, 2005, Economic Policy Department

I was deeply impressed by the working life and culture at MAS during my 10-week long internship at the Captial Markets Department in May 2004.  My colleagues were extremely helpful and I learnt a lot through my interactions with them.

It was therefore an easy choice to make when I was searching for my first job.  My short stint in MAS had convinced me that the organization is one which affords me chances and room to learn, grow and develop.  Furthermore, the opportunity to be involved in the formulation of monetary policy that helps maintain a sustainable and non-inflationary economic growth in Singapore was attractive for someone like me who majored in economics in school.

So far, so good. My experience here has been enriched by the close bonds that I have forged with my colleagues and other Trainee Officers.  Being involved in the MAS Recreation Club as the Sports Secretary in my first year was certainly a highlight thus far, even if it meant I had to stay back quite late on some nights to plan sports events like the Inter-Group Games and the Inter-Central Bank Games.  However, the positive feedback from the MAS staff makes all the efforts worthwhile.

In addition, I was honoured to be nominated to participate in an international seminar on statistics in Paris early this year.  The Seminar was a good learning experience, as it provided a useful framework and background into the issues and concepts behind the use of statistics by Central Banks.  I was also given the opportunity to learn more about the statistical systems used by the other countries that were represented at the Seminar, as well as the challenges they face, from my discussion and exchanges with my fellow participants.

In my (slightly less than) two years here, I have picked up invaluable skills in quantitative and qualitative analysis.  I have learnt through the course of my work to think beyond the box and look at issues from different perspectives to get a more balanced view. And, of course, the seminars and courses ranging from statistical work to commodities and derivative products which I have attended have added significantly to my human capital.

I like the increasingly open culture in MAS where staff are encouraged to speak up on a wide range of topics on our intranet and other engagement fora.  This hastens changes as and when necessary and, in time, brings about a more closely-knitted organisation through the increased interaction between staff.

I have gradually taken on more responsibilities, and each of them poses challenges in their own way.  I am constantly discovering more ways to tackle problems, and at the same time learn more about my strengths and weaknesses.

our peopleJovine Loy, Intern, 2006, External Department
Graduate Officer, 2007, External Department

Having had interest in public policy, I wanted a first-hand insight to life in the public sector.  MAS, with its key role as Singapore’s financial sector, was the most natural choice for me given my university training in economics and finance.

Life in MAS has been a good balance between work and life. While work in the External Department is dynamic and fast paced, there is also recognition that there is life after work.

The nature of work is meaningful, and despite me being relatively new in MAS, my bosses have given me interesting and challenging work to do.

Learning and development are central to the officer’s career in MAS. The training provided for trainee officers has been immensely valuable, not only in improving my technical competencies, but also in helping me bridge the transition from college to work.

Warmth in the MAS working environment cannot be more understated.  The commitment from senior management and HR to reach out to new staff is evident, and very heartwarming.  I was particularly impressed that Chairman and MD made it a priority to speak to the new staff during the Central Banking Induction.
My bosses and colleagues have been very understanding and patient in teaching me the ropes. It is truly a privilege to have bosses I can respect, and colleagues I enjoy working with.

I like the way MAS feels like a big family.  From the intern and graduate officer gatherings to department activities, there are avenues to build relationships. People have a ready smile to welcome new staff into the organization.

Many friendships were also forged during the month-long training program and team-building camp. I will always remember the jubilant cheers and nervous squeals when we overcame our fears to conquer the Pyramid Challenge as a team!

our people Jasmine Neo, Intern, Singapore 2006 IMF-World Bank Organising Secretariat
Graduate Officer, 2007, Capital Markets Intermediaries Department

I chose to intern with MAS as I thought it would be a good chance to get a taste of life in the public sector. To me, I found it meaningful to be able to make a difference in the work that I do. During my internship, I was involved in the preparation for events leading up to S2006, a milestone event which was held for the first time in Singapore! I had an exciting and enriching two months at MAS, with many close bonds forged with my fellow colleagues.

Being attracted by the caring culture here, I decided to join MAS upon graduation.  I think another important reason was that I wanted to gain a wider perspective of the financial sector. Currently, I am working in the Capital Market Intermediaries Department. So far, training has been intense but enjoyable, with our teambuilding trip to Bintan as the highlight! There, experiential learning really taught me how to think out of the box and how to support and trust one another. It was really a test of both physical and mental strength! More importantly, many friendships were formed during these 3 days, which to me, was most memorable. MAS offers many training and development opportunities to aid personal and functional development, which I am looking forward to!

Internship 3 Eliana Tan, Intern, 2004, Financial Centre Development
Graduate Officer, 2005, Capital Markets Department (Corporate Finance)

Interning at the Financial Centre Development Department, I was inspired by the commitment and hard work that went into developing Singapore into a buzzing financial hub. I knew then that I wanted to be a part of the team which could shape the financial landscape here as well as continually enhance our position as a premier financial centre. Currently in the Corporate Finance Division, I fully appreciate the importance of a robust regulatory framework to anchor that position. Such aspirations aside, I enjoy a friendly and dynamic culture at MAS, where the learning never stops and unique experiences abound.
