Singapore Circulation Coins
MAS has the sole right to issue currency notes and coins in Singapore. Two series of currency coins have been issued for general circulation. The first series of circulation coins was issued in 1967. The second and current series of coins (the “Flora Series”) was issued between 1985 and 1987. All currency coins issued are legal tender in Singapore.
Under the Currency Act (Chapter 69), coins issued by MAS shall be legal tender up to their face value in Singapore as follows:
a) in the case of coins of a denomination exceeding 50 cents - for the payment of any amount;
b) in the case of coins of a denomination of 50 cents - for the payment of an amount not exceeding $10; and
c) in the case of coins of a denomination lower than 50 cents - for the payment of an amount not exceeding $2.
In other words, a person may pay up to an amount of $10 in 50-cent coins and $2 in 1-cent, 5-cent, 10-cent or 20-cent coins for any purchases made. There is no legal tender limit for denominations above 50-cent.
However, Sections 13(4) and (5) of the Currency Act also provide that should any shop opt not to accept any particular denomination of notes or coins, it will have to put up a written notice on its premises to state so.
