Description of Project | MAS is embarking on a new platform to provide financial institutions (FIs) with a single touchpoint for their interactions with MAS. This includes developing a whole new user interface from scratch; integrating with existing MAS transaction systems to provide FIs with a consolidated view of their upcoming tasks and status of ongoing submissions; building a secure correspondence module; and creating generic components so that transactions currently conducted off systems (eg. via email) can mix and match components to digitalise their transactions quickly. This is a relatively new team (<1yr old) and you will be involved in seeing the product through to at least beta testing in production with a small number of actual users. |
Expected deliverables for the project | The platform is being built as a product, and aims to deliver a fully functional product as quickly as possible. You will work on a small team with a product manager, 1-2 designers, and 4-8 developers. You will be treated as one of our developers with your own user stories that you will be personally responsible for delivering. In addition, you will be expected to participate in the following activities: Solution brainstorming based on identified opportunities; Setting up quick experiments to compare solutions' feasibility and ability to meet problem statements; Building out identified solution features; Writing test scripts under a Test Driven Development model; Pair programming with an experienced developer; Pushing code through a CI/CD DevSecOps pipeline; and listening in on user interviews. |

Predicting Potential Distress in Financial Institutions

Description of Project | The aim of this project is to come up with a usable model to predict potential distress at MAS' supervised financial institutions. The work includes the following: 1. Literature review of other jurisdictions' methodologies in predicting financial distress; 2. Coming up with the appropriate indicators to determine financial distress and variables contributing to it (i.e. the independent and dependent variables); 3. Building machine learning models to predict financial distress; and 4. Presenting the outcome for discussion and evaluation. |
Expected deliverables for the project | 1. A report outlining the literature review, data used, choice of models, and evaluation metrics; 2. Set of well-documented Python codes for the machine learning models; and 3. A deck of presentation slides to demonstrate the thinking and work done |
Experience and/or skills that the intern(s) may gain from the internship | 1. Applying machine learning techniques to financial data; and 2. Understanding the supervisory concerns of MAS in regulating financial institutions |

Pre-requisites preferred from the intern(s) | 1. Experience in creating Tableau Dashboards 2. Well-versed in scripting languages commonly used in data analytics, preferably Python 3. Macroprudential surveillance and risk scan of the insurance sector

Description of Project | To support the division in executing macroprudential surveillance and supervision tools (e.g. industry-wide stress testing, top-down stress testing, own risk and solvency assessment, industry scans), with the view to help insurance supervisors in the department to better detect and understand the risks and vulnerabilities of the insurance industry and come up with supervisory actions can be taken early if necessary. |
Expected deliverables for the project | Analysis of the results of the stress testing and risk assessment/scans performed, and preparation of presentation slides on the key findings. |
Experience and/or skills that the intern(s) may gain from the internship | 1. Have a greater insight on the work/analysis that is performed by Insurance Department in regulating and supervising insurers in Singapore 2. Build up knowledge on the regulatory and supervisory frameworks that are in place 3. Develop a better understanding of the various types of insurance sectors in Singapore and the risks faced by each of them 4. Hone communication skills in distilling key findings and presenting in a manner that is succinct and easily understood |

Description of Project |
SCAN is a surveillance tool for MAS supervisors that integrates key sources of intelligence – news, social media, macroeconomic factors, and markets data, with FIs’ data to enable timely, accurate, and proactive micro / macro-surveillance of FIs, and risk analyses. |
Expected deliverables for the project | 1. Conduct workshops to gather user journey for a wide range of user scenarios; and think out of the box for innovative solutions enabled by data analytics/tech to meet user needs. 2. Design and recommend best practices for the SCAN’s UI/UX that will be used by supervisors in their daily surveillance work and reporting to MAS Senior management. |
