16 Jul 2002... The Board of Commissioners of Currency, Singapore (BCCS) is pleased to announce the issue of the 2002 Singapore Lion Gold Bullion Coins on 7 August 2002.

Coin Design and Weight

2   This is the last in the series of Singapore Lion Gold Bullion coins of 999.9 fine gold issued since 1991 that bear the privy mark.  A total of 5 coins weighing 1 troy ounce, ½  troy ounce, ¼  troy ounce, 1/10 troy ounce and 1/20 troy ounce with face value of $50, $20, $10, $5 and $1 respectively will be issued. They are struck in proof and brilliant uncirculated versions to set them apart from the ordinary bullion coins.

3   Each coin bears the design of a majestic roaring lion's head on the reverse and the Singapore Arms with year-date 2002 on the obverse.

4   The proof coins are sold in sets of five coins (full set) and sets of four coins (short set, excluding the 1 troy ounce coin).  The following features are incorporated in the proof sets:

a) Latent Image

In addition to the lion's head, a latent image of a horse's silhouette and two Chinese characters¸  can be seen on the 1 troy oz coin when viewed from two different angles.

b) Serial Numbering

Serialised numbers corresponding to that of the Certificate of Authenticity is individually engraved on the ½ troy ounce proof coin.  As no two sets will bear the same number, each set is therefore a unique collection.  The engraving process is a combination of craftsmanship and technology with the use of precision instruments to prevent damage to the coin surface.

c) Ingot Design

The ingot, which feature the magnificent architecture of old and new Supreme Court buildings serves to salute the establishment of Singapore's judiciary since independence.

Limited Worldwide Mintage

5   Mintage of the proof set is limited to 400 and 600 sets respectively for the full and short sets worldwide.

6   Each full set is priced at $2,368 (GST inclusive) and the short set at $1,368 (GST inclusive).
