Economic Analysis

A research project with empirical relevance to Singapore in collaboration with the Economic Policy Group, in one of the following areas:

• Monetary economics;
• International macroeconomics;
• Interactions between finance and the real economy, including potential implications of digital assets;
• Labour market and productivity dynamics; or
• Climate finance and economics.

The intern will have the opportunity to engage in a research project on a topic developed in collaboration with the Economic Policy Group, as well as assist staff economists in preparing regular reports and briefings on current economic developments to support the monetary policy process.

Subject to agreement from the Economic Policy Group, the research project could also be existing work in progress, including projects intended for submission as a research requirement for a course or degree at the intern's educational institution (e.g. Dissertation Essay).

Enterprise Knowledge

The EconTech team is a unit dedicated to the exploration and implementation of advanced AI and data science techniques for economic policy purposes. Recent advances in AI open up new possibilities for economic policy work: extracting timely signals from unstructured data, automating analytical workflows, and augmenting how economists monitor and interpret the economy. The intern will work on an EconTech project that explores and prototypes one such application end-to-end, contributing directly to the team's mandate.

The project undertaken by the intern may involve, but is not limited to:

• Transforming unstructured data into quantitative indicators: building a pipeline that converts non-traditional unstructured data (e.g., news, corporate disclosures, reports) into quantitative time-series measures suitable for nowcasting, forecasting, or economic surveillance
• LLM-based text analytics for policy corpora: using large language models (LLMs) to construct sentiment, stance, topic, or uncertainty measures from speeches, central bank communications, corporate filings, or similar text corpora, and testing their relationship with economic outcomes
• AI for operating and interpreting economic models: exploring how LLM-based agents can serve as an intelligent interface to economic models (e.g., econometric, forecasting, or structural models), setting up and running scenario simulations from natural-language instructions, conducting sensitivity analyses, and translating model outputs into clear, policy-relevant narratives, with appropriate safeguards on accuracy
• Evaluating AI for economic analysis: designing benchmarks and evaluation frameworks to test how reliably LLMs perform economic analysis tasks, informing where such tools can be safely deployed

• A working prototype (documented, version-controlled code) implementing the selected AI application — e.g., a data pipeline producing quantitative indicators, or an AI-assisted analytical workflow
• A validation analysis assessing the quality and usefulness of the outputs — e.g., benchmarked against existing indicators, official statistics, or expert judgment

Financial Centre Development

The Financial Centre Development Department supports the growth of Singapore as an international financial centre and fosters key strategic activities and capabilities to deepen Singapore's position as a world-class financial hub. The intern will support the department's work in analysing the competitiveness of Singapore's financial sector in the area of taxation. The findings will be used to inform our tax policy review on the tax incentives in these sectors. The intern will support Singapore’s ASEAN/ ASEAN+3 Chairmanship of the Finance Track. The intern will be part of the International Department that organises and runs the ASEAN and ASEAN+3 Finance Track meetings during Singapore’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027. Are you excited by the idea of building something that genuinely changes how people learn at work?

We are looking for a motivated and technically curious intern to join the Learning and Development team at MAS. Over six months, you will take on two meaningful projects that sit at the intersection of data, AI, and learning design - working with real data, real stakeholders, and real constraints to deliver solutions that MAS staff will actually use.

Project 1: MAS Course and Learning Pathway Recommendation Engine 

How do you help thousands of staff find the right learning at the right time, when your data is spread across systems and your course catalogue has no clear link to competencies? That is the challenge you will be solving. 

Your primary project is to design, develop, test, and deliver a Course Recommendation Engine for MAS staff. This involves working with data sources across the organisation, building a data pipeline to consolidate and clean them, and developing recommendation logic that surfaces relevant courses based on each staff member's role, function, department, and learning history. The engine will prioritise internally run courses and, where the internal catalogue falls short, intelligently augment recommendations with external courses sourced through large language model (LLM) capabilities. 

Your stretch goal is to take this further — into a Learning Pathway Recommendation Engine that maps staff against competency frameworks and recommends structured learning journeys to close competency gaps and support career growth, drawing from both internal and external sources. 

Project 2: Micro-Learning Tools Research and Resource Playbook 

Your second project explores a different question: what does great short-form, micro-learning look like, and how can L&D teams create it without spending days using an authoring tool? 

You will research and evaluate the landscape of modern micro-learning tools and modalities and translate your findings into something the L&D team can immediately put to use — a Micro-Learning Resource Playbook and a set of ready-to-deploy learning examples that demonstrate what is possible.

This is not a typical internship. You will have end-to-end ownership of two projects that span data engineering, applied AI, instructional design research, and stakeholder engagement. You will leave with a portfolio of work you built from the ground up, practical experience navigating real organisational complexity, and the satisfaction of knowing that what you made is being used.

You are likely in your penultimate or final year of study in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Instructional Design, or a related field. More than any specific qualification, we are looking for someone who is comfortable with ambiguity, energised by problem-solving, and willing to roll up their sleeves and engage stakeholders to get things done. 

On the technical side, you should have working knowledge of Python and data processing libraries, some experience with data cleaning and pipeline development, and a basic understanding of recommendation systems or machine learning. Experience with recommendation systems, LLM APIs and prompt engineering would be a strong advantage. Familiarity with SQL and experience handling structured and unstructured datasets would also be a plus. For Project 2, an eye for good design and a genuine curiosity about how people learn will serve you well — prior experience with e-learning tools is welcome but not required.
