1 The innovative optical security feature on the commemorative notes for the 50th Anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement between Brunei Darussalam and Singapore won the Best Applied Security Product award category at the recent Excellence in Holography Awards 2017. The security feature also received a Commendation Award in the Innovation in Holographic Technology category. The Excellence in Holography Awards are conferred annually by the International Hologram Manufacturers Association (IHMA) to recognise the outstanding and effective use of holography.
2 The commemorative notes were jointly launched on 5 July 2017 by Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, and Mr Lee Hsien Loong, Prime Minister of Singapore, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement between Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
3 Both the Brunei Darussalam and Singapore commemorative notes feature a diffractive, see-through security window that depicts Brunei Darussalam’s Istana Nurul Iman and Singapore’s Istana. The feature uses nanoparticles to create special diffractive and colour-shifting optical effects which are visible to the naked eye but extremely difficult for counterfeiters to replicate. The IHMA noted in its award citation that “this feature represents a significant technological advancement, as the science behind its development is a real step change for both polymer substrate and holograms”.
