About Pulau Ubin

Pulau Ubin is Singapore’s second largest offshore island with rich natural biodiversity. A trip to the rustic island begins and ends with an iconic bum-boat ride between Changi and Pulau Ubin. The boomerang-shaped 1,020-hectare Pulau Ubin lies on the Straits of Johor off the North-eastern coast of mainland Singapore.

Previously known as Granite Island (“Chieo Suar” 石山), Pulau Ubin used to be one of the main granite quarrying sites in Singapore. Pulau Ubin’s granite was used to build historically important structures such as Horsburgh Lighthouse on Pedra Branca (1851), Fort Canning (1858) and the Causeway between Singapore and Malaysia (1923).

A large part of Pulau Ubin has been designated as Nature Area. The island is home to over 720 native plant species, including at least eight not found elsewhere in Singapore. Diverse fauna can be found here including rare wildlife such as the Greater Mousedeer, Leopard Cat, Asian Small-clawed Otter and the Great-billed Heron. Most recently, five new species of fauna were recorded for Singapore at Pulau Ubin. Also located at Pulau Ubin is Chek Jawa Wetlands, a unique intertidal area where six major distinct habitats (sandy beach, rocky beach, seagrass lagoon, coral rubble, mangroves and coastal forest) meet and mix within a small area.
