Singapore, 8 November 2006...The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the Economic Society of Singapore (ESS) have launched their sixth MAS-ESS Essay Competition. This year's essay title, "The Asian Financial Crisis 10 years on: What has changed and what have we learnt?", is especially significant as 2007 will mark the 10th anniversary of the Asian Financial Crisis. The topic was chosen to encourage debate on a historic event that had far-reaching consequences for the regional economies including Singapore.
2 Essays should analyse the causes of the Asian financial crisis and provide an in-depth discussion of the progress of Asian economies during the last 10 years. In particular, the essays should discuss how the Asian economies have responded to the challenges posed by the Asian Crisis and how the crisis have moulded and shaped their developments in both the economic and the political landscape. The essays should also distil the lessons and their implications for the future of the Asian economies.
3 The essay competition will run for three months from today. The following prizes will be awarded to the three best essays in the two categories:

First prize winners will also be given the opportunity of an internship with MAS.

Hard copies can be collected from the security counter at the MAS building. The closing date for the submission of entries is 9 February 2007.
